Adress:

THE NAL STUDENTSHIPS 1998
The Nordic Association of Linguists offers two studentships of NOK 5000,-
annually as an encouragement to talented language and linguistics students.
In
1998 the studentships were granted to:
Kaja Borthen, Trondheim
Åshild Næss, Oslo
Kaja Borthen has finished her "hovedfag" and is preparing a doctoral project
on the syntax, semantics and pragmatics of NPs in Norwegian. Åshild Næss is a
"hovedfag" student writing about the Polynesian outlier language Pilani.
The winners in 1997 were:
Åsa Nordqvist, Göteborg
Henrik Rosenkvist, Lund
Both were doctoral students, Åsa Nordqvist studying non-verbal communication
and Henrik Rosenkvist theoretical syntax.
In 1997 and 1998 all applications came from Sweden or Norway. NAL would be
happy to see a higher number of applications and all Nordic countries
represented among them in the future.

HOW TO JOIN THE NORDIC ASSOCIATION OF LINGUISTS
Membership in NAL includes a subscription to the Nordic Journal of
Linguistics (NJL). You will also receive the Nordic Linguistic Bulletin every
three months (an electronic version appears monthly). Members are entitled to
paying reduced conference fees at the NAL conferences, i.e., Nordic Languages
and General Linguistics (traditionally with an emphasis on the study of
Nordic Languages, as the title indicates), and the series called the
Scandinavian Conference of Linguistics (or Det nordiske lingvistm¿te),
traditionally with more of a bias towards general linguistics. The first of
these conferences is organised approximately every third year, whereas the
second one happens about every one-and-a-half years. The NAL Business Meeting
takes place in connection with the latter conference (which this year is
organised in Odense, Denmark); membership gives you a right to vote there.
The Scandinavian University Press in Oslo, who publish NJL, handle our
membership fees. To become a member of the Nordic Association of Linguists,
please fill in the form below and send it to the address indicated.

<<<<<< JOBS >>>>>>
VISITING POSITIONS AT UCLA (98-99)
The UCLA Department of Linguistics expects to have several SHORT-TERM jobs
available teaching various courses in the coming academic year (1998-99).
These are all replacement positions for faculty who are on leave. There is
no
realistic prospect of any of them developing into permanent positions. We are
particularly interested in faculty from other institutions who would like to
visit our department for part (or all) of the academic year and who would
want
to teach one or two courses (We are on a quarter system; a course is of 10
weeks of lecture plus one week for final exams).
Courses (all undergraduate) that need to be taught are:
1. Ling. 1: Intro. to Language (Fall Quarter: begins Sept 28)
2. Ling 10: Structure of English Words (Winter Quarter: begins Jan 6)
(Spring Quarter: begins March 31)
3. Ling 165B: Advanced (Undergraduate) Syntax: Winter Quarter
4. Ling 110: Historical Linguistics: Spring Quarter
Salary for a single one quarter course is typically between $7,000
and
$10,000 depending on rank.
In addition, we will have openings for some intensive courses at an
advanced graduate level in SOME of the following areas: phonology, phonetics,
psycholinguistics, computational ling., syntax, semantics, specific language
areas (such as African, American Indian). For these courses, we are primarily
interested scholars with established reputations (e.g. people who are on
leave
and who are interested in visiting UCLA), though more junior applicants will
also be considered.
Applicants should send a letter of application, including a CV, a
statement of previous teaching experience, as well as the names, addresses,
and phone numbers of three recommenders to:
Edward Keenan (Chair), Department of Linguistics, UCLA,
Los Angeles, CA 90095-1543.
email: ekeenan@ucla.edu
(Actual letters of recommendation should NOT be sent at thistime; likewise
candidates should not send voluminous dossiers of publications, etc.)
Applications for fall quarter courses should be received by July 1, 1998, and
applications for winter and spring quarter courses should be received by
Sept.
10 1998, though late applications will also be considered as long as the
positions remain unfilled.
Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to inform us by e-mail, as soon
as possible, of their intention to apply for these positions.

LINGVISTISK INSTITUTT 19.05.1998
NTNU, 7034 TRONDHEIM
FORSKERKURS I FONETIKK OG FONOLOGI
30. September - 2. oktober 1998
NTNU. Kurset er åpent for doktorgradsstudenter (prim3/4rt), hovedfagstudenter
og ansatte, med en oppad grense på 20 deltakere, og omfatter både fonetikk og
fonologi, slik at deltakerne forutsettes å følge forelesningsseriene i begge
disipliner. Oppgaveløsning og -gjennomgŒelse vil inngŒ i begge seriene.
Lærere er John Kingston, University of Massachusetts, i fonetikk, og Marc van
Oostendorp, University of Amsterdam og University of Leiden, i fonologi. De
to forelesningsseriene vil utgjøre ca. 10 timer hver. En tentativ profil for
de to kursene er som følger:
Fonetikk:
Often it is useful or even necessary to disturb a system in order to
understand how it works. This is the case with speech perception, where it
has been very useful to use stimuli which in one way or another disturb the
workings of the system. The two most widely used stimuli of this kind are
nonspeech analogues of speech sounds and foreign speech sounds. Nonspeech
analogues are stimuli that aren't identified as speech by the listener but
which nonetheless vary acoustically along dimensions analogous to those of
the speech sounds they mimic. They have been used both to study the
psychoacoustic mechanisms that underlie speech perception and in the great
debate about whether special mechanisms are required for the perception of
speech. Foreign speech sounds have been used instead to study how the
phonology of the listener's native language influences the perception of the
sounds s/he hears.
In this course, I will present the results of experiments using these two
kinds of stimuli in our laboratory, as well as in others, to uncover the
mechanisms of speech perception.
Fonologi:
If we find a schwa in the vowel inventory of a language, this schwa almost
invariably has a special role to play. It is often stressless, it often acts
as an epenthetic vowel, it is often the target of reduction, and it often can
occur in a very simple type of syllable (e.g. the 'core syllable') only.
Because it has all this special properties, schwa provides a unique testcase
for any theory of phonology. In this course we will investigate what the
specific conditions on the appearance of the schwa are, and how we can
account for them in a constrained theory of phonology. We focus on facts of
(dialects of) French, Norwegian, Indonesian and Yupik.
Tentativ timeplan:
Fonetikk: Ons.: 11-13
To.: 9-12, 17.30-19.30
Fre.: 12.30-15.30
Fonologi: Ons.: 14.30-17.30
To.: 13.30-16.30
Fre.: 9-11, 16.30- 18.30

colloquium is to bring together different approaches to the process and to
encourage discussion between them.
PROGRAMME
The invited speakers are Sandra Halverson (University of Bergen), William
Isham (University of New Mexico), Alan Melby (Brigham Young University), and
Miriam Shlesinger (Bar-Ilan University). In addition, the programme contains
about twenty section papers. Their topics range from different methodological
approaches (e.g. computer tools, thinking aloud) to the study of the
processes
of translating and interpreting to the application of cognitive linguistics
to
translation research.
REGISTRATION
The registration fee is 600 FIM and includes the programme, abstracts, lunch
and afternoon coffee on Friday and morning and afternoon coffee and lunch on
Saturday. Lunches and coffees will be served at the campus restaurant Vesta.

CALL FOR PAPERS
CHANGE IN PROSODIC SYSTEMS
University of Konstanz, Germany
February 24-26, 1999
Invited speakers:
Elan Dresher (University of Toronto)
Carlos Gussenhoven (University of Nijmegen)
Tomas Riad (University of Stockholm)
We are pleased to announce the workshop 'Change in Prosodic Systems' as part
of the 21st annual meeting of the German Society of Linguistics (DGfS) in
Konstanz, Germany.
This workshop addresses various aspects of change in prosodic systems with
the aim to enlarge our understanding of the range of variation and the types
of change that are attested in languages. We organise three subsections,
which are closely related and investigate the topic of change in prosodic
systems from a different perspective.
(a) Stress, tone and stress-related phenomena
This section discusses the changing prosodic systems of languages, not only
with respect to stress and syllable structure, but also quantity, syncope,
epenthesis, the domain of segmental rules, etc.
(b) Evidence from Metrics
The study of metrical systems also provides insight into issues like the
prosodic structure of complex words, loans, the way in which weight and
quantity are reflected in metrical structure, etc.
(c) Sources of Change: Analogy, Loans etc.
The main focus of the third subsection is on the source of change and
variation in prosodic systems, and addresses questions like the following.
What leads to variation and or change? What triggers change in a prosodic
system? Can language contact directly influence prosodic systems? What is the
role of analogy? Which paradigms resist analogical change more than others?
What is the role of morphology?
PAPERS are invited on any of the three topics above. Send a one-page abstract

New books from Routledge:
HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS
Anna Giacalone Ramat and Paolo Ramat, eds.
THE INDO-EUROPEAN LANGUAGES
Not since 1937 has a classic reference work appeared for Indo-European. This
new work, however, steps forth to fill a major gap in this rapidly changing
field by making full use of the recent achievements in linguistic theory.
Useful as both an introductory survey and a reference for advanced students
and scholars, the volume provides insight into the variations in the way
Indo-
European is studied while at the same time presenting a unified overview of
Indo-European. The only work available which combines the historical
understanding of Indo-European with a survey of its various sub-groups, this
volume will be useful to a broad range of readers including students of
historical linguistics and comparative philology, modern language students
interested in the background on the languages they are studying, and anyone
interested in the processes of language change and evolution.

NEW BOOKS FROM LONGMAN: 2ND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
STRATEGIES IN LEARNING AND USING A SECOND LANGUAGE
ANDREW D. COHEN
Professor in the Department of English as a Second Language,
University of Minnesota.
Paper 0-582-30588-8
312 pages 1998
Applied Linguistics and Language Study Series. Longman
'Strategies in Learning and Using a Second Language' explores the topic of
learner strategies - the ways in which language learners engage with the
process of learning and communicating in a new language.
The introduction to the book sets out the main theoretical issues,
distinguishing language learning from language use strategies, and describing
the main research methods for their investigation. The author presents
innovative research linking the use of task-specific strategies with language
performance. The volume then presents empirical research investigating the
languages multilinguals select for their verbalized thoughts during language
learning and language use. Finally, the author presents empirical research
focusing on the strategies learners use in language test-taking contexts.
The volume is intended primarily for language teachers and researchers, as
well as for administrators of second language programs. It is also highly
suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate students of applied linguistics
and will be of interest to foreign language students, stimulating them to
reflect on their strategies for learning and using a second language. The
chapters present questions and raise areas for further discussion and study,
making the book suitable for those new to the field. At the same time, the
provision of important new research will appeal to those with more advanced
knowledge in the field.
ERRORS IN LANGUAGE LEARNING AND USE
CARL JAMES
Senior Lecturer in the Linguistics Department at the University of Wales,
Bangor.
Paper 0-582-25763-8
320 pages 1998
Applied Linguistics and Language Study Series. Longman
'Errors in Language Learning and Use' is an up-to-date introduction and guide
to the study of errors in language, and is also a critical survey of previous
work. Error Analysis occupies a central position within Applied Linguistics,
and seeks to clarify questions such as `Does correctness matter?', `Is it
more
important to speak fluently and write imaginatively or to communicate one's
message?'
This book provides a scholarly and well-illustrated theoretical and
historical
background to the field of Error Analysis. A range of relevant questions is
addressed such as whether native speakers make errors, and whether `good
English' for the native speaker is also good for the foreign learner. The
reader is led from definitions of error and related concepts, to
categorization of types of linguistic deviance, discussion of error
gravities,
the utility of teacher correction and towards writing learner profiles.
Throughout, the book is guided by considerable practical experience in
language education in a range of classroom contexts worldwide.

'This book gives a clear and accurate picture of current phonological theory
in a small number of pages.' John Goldsmith, University of Chicago This
skilfully written new text provides a broad, yet up-to-date, introduction to
phonology. Assuming no previous knowledge of phonology or linguistic theory,
the authors introduce the basic concepts and build on these progressively,
discussing the main theories and illustrating key points with carefully
chosen
examples. A wide range of phenomena are covered: speech production, segmental
contrasts, tone, quality, prosodic structure, metrical relations and
intonation. The main theories are introduced and their contributions to our
understanding of phonology, as well as their shortcomings, are discussed
objectively.
Contents: The production of speech / Some typology: sameness and difference /

New books from Oxford University Press:
SPONTANEOUS SPOKEN LANGUAGE: Syntax and Discourse
Jim Miller, University of Edinburgh, and Regina Weinert, University of
Sheffield
The authors examine the types of clauses used by people when they are
speaking
off the cuff. They also analyze the devices speakers use when organizing
larger chunks of language, such as conversations. Using data from English,
German, and Russian, they develop a systematic analysis of spoken English and
highlight cross-language properties. They argue that there are major and
systematic differences between spoken and written language, and conclude by
exploring the implications of their findings for typology, first-language
acquisition, and education.

COORDINATION

Johannessen focuses on coordination, i.e. structures with conjunctions such
as
and, but, and or. These are important words in their constructions because
they have many properties in common with categories like verbs and
prepositions. She has analyzed thirty-three languages and has found many
striking similarities, presenting the first study of coordination from a
cross-linguistic perspective. Her theory of syntactic coordination aims to be
general and universal, and is broadly compatible with Chomsky's minimalist
framework.

A THEORY OF PREDICATES
Ackerman, Farrell (University of California, San Diego) and Webelhuth, Gert
(University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill); A THEORY OF PREDICATES;
ISBN: 1-57586-087-2 (cloth), 1-57586-086-4 (paper); 402 pp.
CSLI Publications 1998: http://csli-www.stanford.edu/publications/
email: pubs@roslin.stanford.edu
In this work two linguists from different theoretical paradigms
develop a new general theory of natural language predicates. This theory is
capable of addressing a broad range of issues concerning (complex)
predicates,
many of which remain unresolved in previous theoretical proposals. Grounded
in
empirical evidence from a wide variety of genetically and geographically
unrelated languages (German, Hungarian, Fox, Nenets, Tzotzil, Malayalam,
among
others), this new theory synthesizes conceptual and representational
assumptions from several different theoretical traditions. The authors focus
on cross-linguistically recurring patterns of predicate formation where
identical contentive notions (i.e., lexical semantic, grammatical function,
and morphosyntactic information) are expressed by predicates consisting of a
single morphological word or by combinations of independent words that need
not form a single syntactic unit. They provide a detailed implementation of
their theory for German tense-aspect, passive, causative, and verb-particle
predicates. In addition, the authors discuss extensions of these
representative analyses to the same predicate constructions in other
languages. Beyond providing a formalism for the analysis of language-
particular predicates, they demonstrate how the basic theoretical mechanisms
they develop can be employed to explain universal tendencies of predicate
formation. For this purpose, Ackerman and Webelhuth introduce the construct
`grammatical archetype' into linguistic theory, relating universal patterns
of
predicate formation to language-particular patterns in a principled fashion.
This book will be of interest to linguists and grammarians from any
generative, cognitive/functional, or traditional perspective. In addition, it
is accessible to interested philosophers, psycholinguists, cognitive
scientists, computational linguists, anthropological linguists, and
philologists.
